Recognizing the need for continued practical educational opportunities for power electronics engineers, Ed and Joy Bloom formed their unique training association in 1981. The basic charter of the association, then and now, is the organization and sponsorship of quality short courses dealing with power processing subjects not offered or addressed by the current engineering programs of colleges or other technical institutions of learning.
Since 1981, the main thrust of the association's educational work has been in the field of magnetic design, a subject of great practical interest to working electronics designers but one that has been sorely neglected by engineering colleges worldwide. To fill this serious educational gap, the association sponsored in 1981, 1985 and in 2002 a total of 38 short courses devoted entirely to the subjects of modern magnetics design for practicing power electronics engineers.
From 1982 through 2007, the association has sponsored 73 public courses, 3-to-5 days in length, nationwide and in Canada and the United Kingdom, on the development of resonant and switch mode power converter circuits, their components and associated magnetic parts, along with segments to include computer-aided design and analysis techniques. The majority of these courses were the first of their kind to team three top experts in power electronics fields so as to cover major course topics in a step-by-step fashion. Attendees at the association's courses over the past 25 years have included staff members from major manufacturing companies worldwide, as well as from United States government agencies such as NASA and the Department of Defense.
Ed Bloom is the President and CEO of e/j BLOOM associates Inc. and its primary technical advisor. He is also a consultant to industry through the Product Engineering Division of the company in the field of power electronics design. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE Power Electronics Society, author of numerous technical papers and design articles, holder of 8 U.S. patents and the co-author of a popular textbook on DC-to-DC power conversion circuits and systems. He is also a member of the Professional Association of Technical Consultants (PATCA) in California and the National Society of Professional Engineers in the USA.
Joy is the Vice-President and CFO of the association and the General Manager of the Educational Division of the firm, coordinating all of its design seminar business and product marketing activities since its birth in 1981. Prior to the formation of the association, she worked for many major aerospace and industrial companies as an assistant in their administrative and accounting offices. Also, in 1980 and early 1981, she served as the meeting planner of seven short courses on the design and measurement of switch-mode power conversion systems. These particular courses featured prominent members of the Power Electronics Group at the California Institute of Technology as speakers.
e/j BLOOM associates Inc. is also an affiliate of the Power Sources Manufacturer's Association (PSMA), a multi-national non-profit organization of companies associated with power electronics services and products.© 1996-2008 e/j BLOOM Associates, Inc.
